Then, Now and There

A selection of short plays by Noel Coward

originally presented in his collection “Tonight at 8.30.”

Directed by Alex McKenzie

Then: WAYS AND MEANS

Cote d'Azur, 1936.

In the bedroom of Mrs. Lloyd Ransome's villa, heiress Stella Cartwright and her husband languish.  They are not-so-wealthy-any-more young socialites, plagued by debts, a gambling habit and general financial ineptitude.  Their prolonged stay at the villa is becoming embarrassing and everything is going wrong for them.  Just when things seem at their most hopeless, rescue comes in the unlikely form of a chauffeur-turned-burglar and their honour can be saved.  Until next time.

Now: THE ASTONISHED HEART

London, Present Day.

Christian Faber, a leading psychiatrist, falls passionately in love with Leonora Vail, an old college friend of his husband, Bastian. Leonora purposely leads him on but is unprepared for the disastrous effect these new emotions have on him. Christian grows more and more desperate as he watches his own mind lose control of itself with tragic consequences.

There: STILL LIFE

Sometime in a slightly different universe where steam trains, zeppelins and Victorian-ish manners and prejudices still exist.

A chance meeting in a train station cafe changes the lives of Alec and Laura. Not so much eyes locking across a crowded room as an up close and personal encounter as Alec removes a bit of grit that an express train has thrown into Laura's eye.  A relationship begins, the progress of which is followed with delight by station staff and customers as the pair rendezvous at the station café.

Three different episodes in different times and places, each showing that human relationships never were, are or will be simple or easy and that love takes many forms.

Actors: Andrew Watson, Chava Ramspek, Christine Blakeley, Daniela Spataru, Deirdre Diamond, Edwin Nichols, Frieda Jacobowitz, Henny Vos, Ken Kitchen, Leo Kogan, Lia Gudaitis, Mark McDaid, Matt Percy, Meriel Overloop, Paddy O'Connell, Peter Hubbard, Reinhardt Chamonal, Reinier Halbertsma, Robert Flitcroft, Simon Murphy, Sinead Donovan, Tamara Vermunt
